Jeongwon Ssambap Boribap is a home-style Korean restaurant in an alley near Sillim Station, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, run by a warm, elderly married couple. The menu centers on bossam, jeyuk (stir-fried pork), and ureong-doenjang (freshwater snail soybean paste) set meals, priced between 8,000 and 11,000 won, remarkably low given the staggering portions. The suyuk (boiled pork) arrives freshly cooked, cut into thick slices that stay tender whether hot or cooled. The barley rice, true to the restaurant's name, is excellent, and wrapping it in lettuce with kongjang (thick soybean paste) recreates the essence of a home-cooked meal prepared by a loving mother. The jeyuk-bokkeum is generous enough to stand on its own, with a gently sweet seasoning that harmonizes with the ssam greens. Banchan quality runs consistently high: a dried-eggplant jorim has an unexpectedly chewy texture that becomes habit-forming, and the namul dishes are seasoned liberally rather than being afterthoughts. The clear miyeokguk (seaweed soup), simmered in proper broth, is refined and deeply satisfying. Biji-doenjang and other items are seasoned with a precise, comfortable hand. Rice and all banchan are unlimited, with a self-serve system during busy periods. An extra portion of meat can be added for 2,000 won when ordering for two or more. The owners' attentiveness stands out, they have been known to bring an apron to a guest wearing a dress shirt to prevent splashes. The restaurant occupies a small storefront along a gosiwon and one-room alley, so the interior is modest, but it is kept clean and orderly. A steady queue forms during peak lunch hours, so timing a visit outside the rush ensures a more comfortable experience.
