Hongsi Hanjeongsik 홍시한정식

Hongsi Hanjeongsik is a Korean set-meal restaurant on Hwarang-ro 19beon-gil in Seonggeon-dong, Gyeongju. Basic and bulgogi set menus arrange roughly fifteen foods across appetizers, the main table, rice, and dessert. The opening sequence includes soft chicken porridge, a pan-fried savory pancake, and vegetable salad, separating warm grain, a browned oily surface, and cool crisp leaves. The larger spread follows with grilled mackerel, perilla-seed porridge, marinated crab, vegetables, seasoned salads, and braised dishes. Mackerel develops browned skin while keeping the flesh moist. Perilla porridge adds nutty seed aroma and a thick consistency to finely softened grain. Marinated crab brings chilled meat and stronger saline seasoning, providing a different intensity from the mild porridge. Seasoning across the table remains restrained enough that one plate does not cover the next, encouraging small alternating portions. The bulgogi set adds soy-seasoned beef and stone-pot rice. Thin meat becomes tender in a gently sweet soy glaze, while the hot pot creates both separate rice grains and a browned crust. Dessert follows through two opposite temperatures. Frozen ripe persimmon has soft, cold flesh and direct fruit sweetness. Ssanghwa tea, simmered for twelve hours, returns warmth with the bittersweet aroma of several traditional medicinal ingredients. The interior preserves an upscale 1990s arrangement that now reads as distinctly retro. Old wooden furniture, folding screens from the 1970s, and traditional decorative objects give the rooms the feel of a maintained family home rather than a recently designed restaurant. A landscaped garden and entrance lead toward rooms where many small bowls fill a large table.
