300m from Hongdae Station. Butter Bakery is a small artisan bakery tucked into a back alley of Hapjeong-dong in Mapo-gu, Seoul, built around richly buttery breads that have earned a devoted local following. Despite the compact footprint, the display is tightly curated with an appealing variety laid out across categories. The baguettes anchor the menu - crisp on the outside with a moist interior that demonstrates solid baking fundamentals - and come in multiple filled varieties that explore different flavor directions. The green onion cream baguette pairs a thick, savory cream with the crunchy shell to memorable effect, while the honey Gorgonzola baguette attracts such high demand that it frequently sells out early in the day. The jambon baguette and jambon croissant are both refined preparations, with the croissant displaying distinct flaky layers and a deep butter fragrance that lingers. The black sesame anko butter baguette offers a crunchy texture reminiscent of sesame brittle, and the fig bread distinguishes itself by using a fig jam filling rather than whole dried figs. The salt bread runs about one and a half times the size of standard versions, delivering a pronounced butteriness that lives up to the bakery name. The chocolate rock is a visual novelty - chocolate with embedded nuts shaped to resemble an actual stone - and the mentaiko mayo rusk is compulsively snackable. An appearance on the television program Cheonhajeppang brought additional recognition, and the gift-friendly packaging makes many items suitable for bringing to others.
