Okdang 옥당

Okdang, also known as Sanjang Garden, sits in the rural outskirts of Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and serves a single fixed menu: lotus leaf rice. The rice is steamed inside a lotus leaf, absorbing a gentle, earthy fragrance that permeates every grain. Each accompanying side dish is seasoned with restraint, bringing out the natural flavor of its ingredients rather than relying on salt or spice. Notable dishes include lotus root dressed in black sesame, tofu gangjeong, pan-fried jeon, and grilled fish, with wild mountain greens added to the spread in spring. When a dish runs low, staff approach the table proactively to offer refills, delivering a level of attentiveness frequently compared to fine hotel dining. Makgeolli and other beverages stored in the refrigerator are complimentary, and drivers are sometimes sent home with a bottled makgeolli as a parting gift. Freshly brewed lotus leaf tea rounds out the experience, giving the meal a genuinely wholesome, health-conscious character. At 12,000 won per person, the pricing is startlingly low given the care invested in every element. Despite the remote location, the restaurant draws crowds year-round, and waits exceeding one hour are common even on weekdays. Phone reservations are not accepted. Instead, guests sign a waiting list on arrival and receive a call when their table is ready. Arriving thirty minutes before the 11:30 AM opening to register is the most reliable way to reduce the wait. The restaurant closes at 3 PM and observes a regular day off every Tuesday. After the meal, the adjacent Naengcheon-gol Valley and the surrounding scenery make for a pleasant walk.
