Johnny Dumpling Bongwan is a dumpling specialist on Bogwang-ro in Yongsan-gu, a five-minute walk from Itaewon Station Exit 4. The restaurant has built a three-story building on the strength of its dumplings alone — a claim that feels entirely justified by the quality delivered. Starting from a tiny original location, the operation relocated to its current spacious building with much-improved interiors while preserving the same flavors. The pan-fried gun-mandu is the most popular order: gyoza-style dumplings with a perfectly crispy starch-lace border that shatters on contact, releasing a burst of savory juice inside. The shrimp gun-mandu, packed with chives and plump whole shrimp, paired with a cold Tsingtao beer, creates a combination that dissolves daily tension. The shrimp mul-mandu features chewy wrappers encasing a generously packed filling that delivers strong satisfaction, and the songi-beoseot mul-mandu carries authentic mushroom fragrance for a distinctive variation. The bandal-mandu (half-moon dumplings) are notable for their exceptional juice content, with both shrimp and pork textures perceptible inside. The hongap-mandu-guk provides generous mussels in a clean, refreshing broth that balances beautifully with the dumplings; request complimentary rice to transform it into a full meal. Mapo-dubu is mild and flavorful, making a worthy side addition. Danmuji and jjasai are served as basic accompaniments. For a single-menu order, the gun-mandu takes clear priority; for two diners, combining gun-mandu with either mul-mandu or the mussel dumpling soup creates the ideal spread. The staff are warm and attentive, and the absence of a break time makes this a convenient destination for beer and dumplings at any hour. Dumplings are produced at an external kitchen and delivered to the shop, so they emerge almost instantly after ordering, though they may arrive slightly below piping-hot temperature. The building spans three floors, but weekday operations typically use only the first floor. Narrow staircases require caution for those with strollers. Lunch and dinner peak hours generate waits.
