Hosujip 호수집

Hosujip is a decades-old neighborhood institution on Cheongpa-ro in Jungnim-dong, a short walk from Seoul Station, serving only two main dishes: dakbokkeum-tang (spicy braised chicken stew) and charcoal-grilled chicken skewers. The restaurant has maintained its old-school silbi-jip atmosphere since opening in the early 1980s, with a no-frills interior that seats roughly eight people at a time. The dakbokkeum-tang arrives in a vivid red broth generously loaded with perilla leaves, mushrooms, and tteokbokki rice cakes. The stew starts mild but deepens into an addictive richness the longer it simmers on the tabletop burner, with a subtle doenjang undertone that distinguishes it from standard versions of the dish. The real draw, however, is the chicken skewers grilled over yeontan charcoal briquettes, which impart an unmistakable smoky char that holds up even after the meat cools. Each diner may order a maximum of two skewers, and ordering the full allowance is strongly recommended. Finishing the meal with bokkeumbap is essential, the kitchen folds in generous amounts of sesame oil and roasted seaweed for a satisfying close. The small portion of chicken in the small-size stew means pairing it with skewers or ojingeo-bokkeum is advisable. The tiny space and media exposure have made waits unavoidable, with lines forming well before the 5 p.m. opening rush and persisting past 8:30 p.m. on busy evenings. The skewers sell out later in the evening, so early arrival is the surest strategy. The owner and staff are notably warm, adding to the nostalgic charm of this enduring neighborhood fixture. Last orders are accepted until 10 p.m.
