Gyerim Sikdang 계림식당

200m from Jongno 3-ga Station. Gyerim Sikdang is a long-established dakbokkeumtang (spicy chicken stew) restaurant tucked into an alley near the entrance of Nakwon Arcade in Jongno-gu, Seoul, selected for the 2024 Michelin Bib Gourmand. The menu offers only two items, dakbokkeumtang and dak-hanmari, with the overwhelming majority of diners choosing the former. The broth is loaded with garlic, producing a clean, savory base free of artificial seasoning that deepens progressively as it simmers at the table. The chicken is remarkably fresh, carrying an almost sweet flavor, and the rice cakes submerged in the stew soften into a pleasantly chewy texture. The well-fermented kkakdugi provides a tangy crunch that complements the chicken. As the broth reduces and concentrates, it becomes an ideal companion for soju. Diners can finish with either kalguksu noodles or fried rice added to the remaining stock. The restaurant attracts all age groups from their twenties through their seventies, embodying the timeless appeal of a classic Korean nopo. The space is cramped and lively, but that atmosphere is an integral part of the experience. Waits are common during meal hours, and the narrow alley location can be tricky to find on a first visit.
