Tteuran 뜰안

Near Insadong. Tteuran is a traditional Korean tea house occupying a renovated hanok in the alley district of Ikseon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The establishment has been in operation since before Ikseon-dong gained its current popularity as a tourist destination, and a remodeling effort has given the interior a fresh, tidy appearance. Small pots of flowers line the entrance, and the inside divides evenly between floor-seated ondol sections and table seating. The high ceiling prevents the compact space from feeling cramped, and the heated ondol floor makes it a particularly inviting refuge on cold days. The menu spans a comprehensive range of traditional Korean teas, including ssanghwa-cha (herbal medicinal tea), sujeonggwa (cinnamon persimmon punch), sikhye (sweet rice drink), omija (five-flavor berry), ginger, yuzu, and chrysanthemum, alongside flower teas such as plum blossom and magnolia. The ssanghwa-cha delivers a deep, earthy herbal intensity, and the iced omija provides a sweet-tart refreshment suited for warmer months. The mulberry leaf tea has earned favorable reviews for its toasty, nutty character. Among desserts, the old-fashioned patbingsu arrives in a rice bowl-sized portion with well-cooked sweet red beans. Traditional snacks such as mugwort garaetteok with honey, pumpkin tteok, and hangwa (Korean confections) round out the offerings. Pairing daechu-cha (jujube tea) with hangwa is a popular combination. The tea house draws a notable proportion of international visitors and sits in an ideal position for those exploring Ikseon-dong after visiting Jongmyo Shrine or Changdeokgung Palace. The small size of the shop means weekend seating fills quickly, and the floor-seated areas may become uncomfortable during extended stays. Time slots when middle-aged groups gather can produce a noisier-than-expected atmosphere inside the compact space.
