Seogung 서궁

Seogung is a Chinese restaurant on Gukje-geumyung-ro in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, near Saetgang Station in Yeouido, operating continuously since 1978. Originally a small storefront on the ground floor of the Hongwoo Building, it has since relocated to a larger space while maintaining its identity as an authentic Chinese restaurant run by a Hwasang (overseas Chinese) family with a specialty in dumplings. The signature gun-mandu features thick wrappers fried to a golden crisp, yielding a shatteringly crunchy exterior that gives way to a juicy, savory filling, a textbook demonstration of the crisp-outside, moist-inside ideal, distinctly richer and nuttier than mass-produced alternatives. Steamed dumplings are also available but can carry a raw-flour note, making the fried version the safer choice. The fried rice arrives with each grain individually toasted to a dry, firm finish rather than a wok-charred style, producing a clean, simple flavor in generous volume. Service speed is notable, the dish often appears almost as soon as the order is placed. The mild egg drop soup served alongside pairs naturally with the rice and invites two or three refills. The tangsuyuk follows an old-school template with generous, tender pork cuts coated in a clear sauce and a pleasingly chewy texture. Gathering over ohhyang-janguk (five-spice braised pork) with tangsuyuk on the side is a classic combination among Yeouido office workers. Cilantro comes standard in the ohhyang-janguk, so those who dislike it should request its omission. Staff are consistently friendly, and the owner's warm reception of longtime regulars adds to the restaurant's character. The spacious hall fills up during dinner hours and can get lively, so reservations are recommended. Parking is convenient.
