Sasaenghwal is a basement fusion restaurant reached by stairs from a residential alley on Sinsa-ro 14-gil in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. Orders are placed at a kiosk, and the menu extends beyond pasta to salad bowls, a four-cutlet platter, risotto, pizza, and coffee. Badatmaeul pasta uses an oil base with plentiful clams and shrimp, centering shellfish liquid and the resilient texture of seafood. Sigol oil pasta takes a garlic-and-oil direction but adds pork belly and the aroma of perilla leaves, giving it more rendered pork fat and Korean leafy fragrance. Sharing these two plates separates shellfish and shrimp from pork and perilla rather than repeating another cream sauce. The Gamdong four-type katsu platter places four cutlets with different fillings or coatings on one large plate for division among a group. The couscous basil chicken salad bowl includes tender chicken, vegetables, olives, cheese, sausage, granola, sweet pumpkin, and tomato sauce. It carries more grain, protein, salinity, and sweetness than a plain leaf salad. Sous-vide sirloin barley tomato risotto combines soft beef and chewy barley in a red sauce. Shrimp rose cream pasta and Toowoomba pasta coat noodles in thick cream-based sauces. Gorgonzola pizza provides a bread-based plate that is easy to divide, while a Scotch egg wraps a cooked egg in meat and a fried coating as a compact side. Oil pasta can be followed by tomato risotto without repeating dairy, while a cream pasta can be balanced by the vegetable and grain bowl. The compact underground room uses subdued lighting and decoration, supporting two diners or a small group arranging several plates within reach. Geisha coffee is available after the savory courses, moving the table from oil, cream, and fried food to a distinct roasted aroma.
