Near Daehangno. Nanumi Tteokbokki Seongdae Bonjeom has been serving rice-cake tteokbokki in front of Sungkyunkwan University since 1989, establishing itself as one of the longest-running street-food institutions in Jongno-gu. Featured on You Quiz and numerous television programs, the restaurant has built its reputation above all else on the texture of its ssaltteok. The rice cakes are impossibly soft and pillowy, closer in character to freshly pounded injeolmi than anything typically found at a bunsik restaurant, yet they absorb the sweet-then-spicy sauce deep into their core, delivering full flavor with every bite. The sauce opens with sweetness and builds toward a moderate heat on the finish, appearing darker and more intense than it actually tastes. The gimbap is rolled to order, deliberately mild in seasoning so that it functions as a palate-cleansing counterpart when dipped into the tteokbokki sauce. Fish cakes are cut thick and substantial, at their best with the house-made special soy sauce that adds a sweet, layered depth. The fish cake broth served alongside carries a nostalgic warmth that completes the classic bunsik experience. The dining area is compact and fills quickly during meal hours, though takeout in cup-style containers is available for eating on the move. The shop operates around the clock, which provides a practical advantage for late-night or early-morning cravings. Some diners find the portions modest relative to the price, but the prevailing consensus holds that the quality of the rice cake itself, that marshmallow-soft, sauce-saturated bite, is reason enough to return.
