Igong Gimbap is a comprehensive bunsik restaurant directly outside Korea University's back gate in Anam-dong, Seongbuk-gu, embodying everything a great Korean snack bar should be. Regarded as a legendary fixture among the university-area eateries, it draws not only students but also neighborhood residents and older locals who have been coming for years. The signature item is the chamchi poktan gimbap, tuna bomb gimbap, which lives up to its explosive name with a filling-to-rice ratio that heavily favors the tuna. Each roll reaches a thickness comparable to a forearm, making single-bite consumption virtually impossible, while the deliberately low rice proportion keeps the carbohydrate load moderate. The tuna arrives unseasoned by mayonnaise, which is served separately so diners can control the amount with each dip. Since the tuna filling is quite dense and dry on its own, the mayo adds essential creaminess and richness. Beyond the tuna bomb, the menu includes Igong gimbap with burdock root, crunchy gochu gimbap with green chili, and sweet jeyuk gimbap with stir-fried pork, all sharing the same generous-filling philosophy that makes a single roll a complete meal. The bunsik side menu is equally varied. Rabokki features firm ramen noodles soaked in tteokbokki sauce, pairing naturally with gimbap, while the jjolbokki delivers chewy jjolmyeon noodles in abundant quantity. The udon and ramyeon are cooked over high heat in classic bunsik fashion, producing pleasantly al-dente noodles. Pricing is strikingly low, roughly 20,000 won feeds four people comfortably, and the owner's reputation for generous portions only reinforces the value proposition. The shop observes a midday break between lunch and dinner service; confirming the exact hours on the day of your visit will prevent an unnecessary trip.
