Kitchen Urawa is a small Japanese home-style restaurant on the basement floor of 61 Nangye-ro in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Stairs lead down to a room decorated with Japanese ornaments, small objects, warm lights, and softly playing music. The enclosed basement is divided into compact tables that accommodate solo meals, family dinners, and two-person conversations without turning the space into a large themed hall. Chicken nanban is the central dish. The kitchen coats and fries chicken, cuts it into pieces, then adds a sweet-and-sour nanban sauce and a thick tartar sauce containing finely chopped ingredients. The crumb coating retains a brittle texture, while the meat beneath it holds moisture. Some areas absorb the thin nanban dressing and others carry a heavier spoonful of tartar, allowing adjacent pieces to taste different even though they come from the same fried chicken portion. The dish arrives as a set rather than as an isolated plate of meat. Rice, soup, and several neatly separated side dishes occupy the rest of the tray. Sake-don changes both the ingredient and the cooking approach. Slices of salmon are arranged over rice, making fish and grain the focus instead of fried meat and sauce. Tonkatsu returns to frying, using a thick piece of pork beneath a bread-crumb crust, then slicing it for a set with rice and accompaniments. Across the menu, seasoning leans gently sweet rather than relying on forceful chile heat or heavy spice. The acidity of the nanban dressing, richness of tartar, salmon in the rice bowl, and pork inside the cutlet each supply a different main element, but all remain within the recognizable frame of a Japanese set meal. Families and individual diners use the same compact room, and children can eat from the rice, mild meat, and side-dish arrangement. Former neighborhood residents also return to the basement restaurant after moving away. That repeat pattern fits the food: these are complete everyday meals built from a main item, rice, soup, and small sides rather than elaborate courses.
