Dongbuk Hoejip is a second-floor sashimi restaurant on Ilchul-ro in Donghae-si, Gangwon Province, widely regarded as one of the two essential mulhoe destinations in the city alongside Buheung Hoejip. Locals make up a significant share of the clientele-a reliable indicator of quality. The mulhoe arrives in an icy broth with a distinctive sweet-and-sour depth that sets it apart from the typical aggressive chogochujang dressing found elsewhere: the seasoning is clean, tangy, and layered rather than one-dimensionally spicy. The raw fish is sliced into fine, almost fluffy pieces, impeccably fresh and free of any off-flavor, with generous portions that maintain satisfaction from first bite to last. The finish is notably nutty, and mixing in warm rice creates a pleasing temperature contrast that regulars consider part of the experience. Bokjiri, a clear blowfish soup, is another standout: the puffer fish skin and flesh are satisfyingly chewy, and the broth is seasoned with such precision that reviewers describe the chef's hand as masterful. The modumhoe assorted sashimi platter offers a variety of fish cut into easy-to-eat portions, accompanied by octopus and conch as garnishes. Among the banchan, a dressed octopus salad earns particular praise for its perfectly calibrated seasoning. The hoedeopbap rice bowl is decent but unremarkable compared to the mulhoe. The owner is friendly and proactive about providing extras like additional rice. Turnover is fast, so arriving around 4:30 p.m. means a relaxed entry, but past 5 p.m. a wait becomes almost certain-early timing is strongly recommended.
