Hanseobang Kalguksu is a noodle restaurant at 468 Gangwon-nambu-ro in Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do, carrying a three-generation legacy in the Tongli area. The kitchen is now run by the second generation (the founder s son-in-law), preserving a tradition that includes an on-site noodle room where dough is pressed to order. Each bowl takes roughly twenty minutes to reach the table from the moment of ordering, but the wait yields thick, chewy strands with a handmade character that bears no resemblance to commercial noodles - closer to what a rural grandmother might roll out by hand. The signature chicken kalguksu occupies a flavor space between chicken porridge and samgyetang: the broth is dense and garlic-forward, and stirring in the house pepper-paste dadaegi deepens the savoriness considerably. The anchovy kalguksu offers a mild, clean alternative, and a sweet, chewy kongguksu appears on the summer menu. Both versions are priced at 10,000 won, and the chicken option draws the stronger recommendation, though individual preference ultimately decides. The true hidden treasures, however, are the house-made kimchi and barley rice. The kimchi is frequently singled out in reviews for its quality, and the barley rice is available free of charge from a self-service station - paired with the restaurant s own gochujang, it becomes a substantial side dish on its own. Given that the kalguksu portions are very large (the bowl size tends to surprise first-time visitors), taking only a modest scoop of barley rice is the practical approach. The interior was recently renovated and is now clean and bright, though the restrooms are not separated by gender, which some guests find uncomfortable. Doors open at 9:30 AM, and by 11:00 AM waits are already forming. For anyone finishing a hike in the Taebaek mountains with a serious appetite, few restaurants in the area deliver as complete a meal.
