달고떡볶이

Dalgo Tteokbokki is a tteokbokki institution that has stood in front of Dalseong High School in Dalseo-gu, Daegu since 1980 — the name is a contraction of 'Dalseong-go tteokbokki.' Featured on Baek Jongwon's 3 Great Emperors and counted among Daegu's top three tteokbokki spots, it has maintained a devoted following for over four decades. Unlike standard gochujang-based tteokbokki, this version uses a soy sauce base with coarse domestically sourced chili flakes, producing a broth that looks red but tastes distinctly sweet and mild. The rice cakes are notably high quality — chewy on the outside with a soft, steamed-rice-cake-like interior that sets them apart from the common market-style tteokbokki entirely. The fried triangle dumplings, stuffed with glass noodles, become deeply addictive when soaked in the sauce, drawing comparisons to seasoned fried chicken. A separate menu item, yangnyeom mandu, serves the fried dumplings topped with additional sauce. Sundae is clean and straightforward, and the boiled eggs make a good addition. At 2,000 won for tteokbokki, 2,000 won for dumplings, 3,000 won for sundae, and 1,000 won for two boiled eggs, the pricing is remarkably generous — and the use of domestically grown chili flakes in a 2,000-won item reflects a conscientious approach to sourcing. Food arrives almost immediately after ordering. The shop is located inside Sinnaedang Market, and similar-sounding establishments exist nearby, so verifying the exact location before visiting is important. Street parking in the narrow market alleys can be challenging.
