용뎅이매운탕
Yongdaengi Maeun-tang is a catfish stew specialist on Taesan-ro in Yeondong-myeon, Sejong Special Autonomous City, operating on a single-menu concept for over fifteen years along the banks of the Geum River. The restaurant offers both outdoor and indoor seating, and during spring and autumn the riverside scenery fills every outdoor table to capacity. The catfish maeuntang features a subtly sweet broth in which the catfish flavor rises pleasantly without any of the muddiness that can plague freshwater fish stews, delivering a clean and refreshing taste. The true standout is the sujebi: the dough is mixed thin, left to rest, then dropped into the simmering pot, producing dumplings of extraordinary softness and chew that meld seamlessly with the broth. Generous quantities of minari add a fragrant herbal note, and adding ramyeon noodles introduces yet another dimension. The catfish itself is surprisingly tender and savory, accessible even to those who normally avoid freshwater fish, and mild enough for children to enjoy. Portions are generous, making the value-to-price ratio highly favorable. Banchan is minimal, but the main dish's completeness more than compensates. Those who prefer a mild, clean-tasting stew will find it excellent as served, while a request for added chili powder brings sharper heat. A large cafe sits immediately adjacent to the restaurant, making a post-meal coffee a natural extension of the outing. No break time means the restaurant can be visited at any hour. Access by public transportation is difficult, making a car essential, and the approach road is narrow with a steep grade that demands caution from less experienced drivers. Parking is available but the lot can feel tight. Outdoor seating operates until 3 PM, and the indoor section uses floor seating requiring shoes to be removed.
