Live Pungcheon freshwater eel is bought by weight on the first floor, along with a table charge, and then you head upstairs to grill it yourself over charcoal. On weekends it saves a lot of confusion if one person queues for eel downstairs while another holds a table upstairs. The eels are plump, about the size of a mackerel, and basting them with sauce is also on you, so it is real work. Drinks and kalguksu are paid for separately, in advance, on the second floor, and the kalguksu, light on seasoning, goes down easily after the rich eel. At high tide, the windows fill with sea.
