Eomjine Pojangmacha is a seafood restaurant in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, nationally renowned for its cockle bibimbap and beef tartare. The signature cockle bibimbap arrives with a mountain of seasoned cockles—half mixed with rice and the other half served as cockle muchim alone. Perilla oil (or sesame oil) provides a dominant nutty aroma, while cheongyang chili peppers add a sweet-spicy kick that defines the dish. Regulars eat the pre-mixed rice portion first, then order an additional bowl of plain rice to mix with the remaining cockle muchim for a second round. Wrapping bites in the provided sheets of gim (dried seaweed) elevates the flavor further. Those sensitive to heat may request the kitchen omit the cheongyang peppers when ordering. The beef tartare served alongside is exceptionally fresh; dipping it in the salt-sesame oil sauce and pairing it with thinly sliced pear yields a clean, elegant taste. Over ten side dishes are seasoned with precision, each encouraging another spoonful of rice, and the accompanying seaweed soup is enriched with beef for added depth. The main branch is nearly always full during meal hours, but rapid table turnover keeps waits manageable. A well-equipped waiting area on the second floor of the main building makes the queue comfortable. When the main hall is at capacity, staff direct guests to a second branch just thirty seconds away on foot, serving an identical menu. A dedicated parking lot is located roughly fifty meters from the main branch. The restaurant is widely considered an essential stop on any Gangneung trip, and for two diners the most efficient order is one cockle bibimbap, one beef tartare, and an extra bowl of rice.
