Udon Kazoku 우동가조쿠

Udon Kazoku is a Japanese-run sanuki udon restaurant in front of Hanyang University in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, which has also appeared on the television show Wednesday Food Talk. While branches exist in Hongdae and Seongsu, the Hanyang University flagship is widely regarded as delivering the best quality among them. The fresh udon noodles define the experience, dense, springy, and full-bodied in a way that sets them clearly apart from ordinary udon. The broth carries a pronounced katsuobushi depth that remains clean and transparent, approaching the character of udon served in Japan itself. The standard Kazoku udon comes topped with a substantial shrimp tempura, and the bukkake udon provides the purest showcase for the noodle texture at its finest. The cold udon features excellent noodles but a broth that can lean salty, while the yuk-yuk udon generates less enthusiasm compared to the core menu items. The potato croquette arrives hot and serves as a popular side, pairing well with the optional tonkatsu. The restaurant underwent recent renovations that refreshed the interior to a clean, modern standard, and the attention to hygiene extends to details like dust-free pickled radish containers, coaster trays, and utensil holders, a level of care that speaks to the kitchen's standards without needing to inspect it directly. All staff are Japanese nationals providing attentive, friendly service. Lunchtime waits are common, and while a bar-style counter accommodates solo diners, the overall space is compact. Parking options are limited in the area, and Seoul Pay is not accepted.
