Chununseook is a cultural arts cafe in Boseong-eup, Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, created by transforming a Joseon-era historic hanok into a modern cafe, which officially opened on August 29, 2019. The original building was constructed with pine wood soaked in seawater for three years and dried for an additional three, a total of ten years invested in its creation. The hanok once faced demolition after losing its cultural heritage designation due to maintenance difficulties, but restoration began in 2011, bringing the structure back to life. The grounds today feature tea trees over 300 years old, century-old pine trees, and more than 30 species of carefully cultivated flora that shift the scenery with each season. The signature drink is the Boseong nokcha latte, showcasing the region's renowned green tea, and the coffee is prepared using premium-grade beans. Desserts including injeolmi-ssuk cake, banana cake, and chocolate cake earn praise for their rich yet not excessively sweet profiles. The lemonade is mixed with cold water rather than soda or cider, resulting in a gentler, less stimulating beverage. The interior is decorated with vintage cups and warm lighting that evoke the layered passage of time within the space. Across from the main building, a cave seating area stays warm even in winter, lit by soft ambient lighting that creates a uniquely cozy retreat. Outdoor seating offers the soothing sound of wind moving through bamboo groves, a setting where the phrase 'the most Korean thing is the most global thing' feels genuinely apt. Ample parking is available on site, and the cafe pairs naturally with visits to Boseong's famous green tea plantations. The owner is known to share the building's full history and significance with interested guests, and a postcard handed out at ordering time adds a layer of storytelling that deepens the visit.
