Mungtaerim Cafe 멍때림카페

Mungtaerim Cafe at 1970-34 Haeannam-ro in Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa County combines a cafe with spaces for reading, meditation, and performance. It appeared in The Glory as the filming background for Lee Sa-ra's studio and the terrace where characters meet. Matttaerim, the food-and-drink section, serves cold-brew hibiscus and an ice-cream croffle as principal items. Its coffee list includes Americano, cafe latte, vanilla latte, cafe mocha, and caramel macchiato, with teas and ades also available. Croissants, bagels, cakes, and pastry-style salt bread form the bakery selection. Other zones have distinct uses: Noettaerim is set aside for reading, Mamttaerim for meditation, Sup-ttaerim for the outdoors, and Kkumttaerim for lodging. Indoor seats and a terrace face Manisan and the surrounding Ganghwa landscape. The separate Mungtaerim Chapel was designed by architect Lee Eun-seok and received a Korean Institute of Architects Award in 2023. It was conceived as a small public meditation space open to anyone rather than as a conventional place of worship. The chapel takes the form of a simple concrete box lifted away from the ground. Its front window faces the West Sea, while the rear wall holds a pipe organ. Twelve green, square funnel windows on the right frame the surrounding foliage, and the neutral concrete wall on the left receives light and reflections. Inside, three zones divide the experience: the Sea Chapel looks toward the distant water, the Small-Room Chapel creates an enclosed place for one person, and the Sky Chapel opens toward greenery and sky. In 2026, the building hosts a performance series combining organ, orchestral music, vocal music, and chamber music.
