Jongno Yangjo 종로양조

Jongno Yangjo is a craft brewery on the second floor of Nakwon Arcade at 428 Samil-daero in Jongno, Seoul. It began brewing in the arcade in 2016 and uses names tied to its immediate neighborhood, including Ikseon IPA, Tapgol Porter, and Jongno Lager. The naming places Ikseon-dong, Tapgol, Jongno, and Nakwon directly on the beer rather than presenting the brewery as a location-neutral producer. Jongno Lager is pale gold and light in body, with lime and floral notes over a clean grain base. Ikseon IPA moves toward a more pronounced hop aroma and bitterness. Tapgol Porter is dark, with roasted malt bringing toasted, nutty, and bitter elements that contrast with the lager. Names such as Nakwon Pilsner, Wild Sejong, and Cherry Gose extend the range from clear, crisp beer to farmhouse fermentation and fruit acidity. Placing these styles side by side reveals visible and sensory differences in color, carbonation, bitterness, malt depth, and fruit character. The same second-floor address houses Paradise Lost, a live bar centered on the brewery's beer. Low lighting, water-inspired interior elements, a stage, and dining tables combine a music room with a beer hall. Brewing, beer service, food, and performance occupy the same floor of Nakwon Arcade. Food at the live bar includes burgers, Detroit-style pizza, and meatballs. Detroit pizza uses a rectangular, thick base with cheese and sauce reaching toward deeply browned edges. Its baked cheese, tomato, and chewy crust can stand beside hop bitterness or the lighter carbonation of a lager. A burger compresses bread, patty, and sauce into one dense bite. Meatballs add ground-meat texture and a concentrated sauce that meets the grain and roasted flavors in darker beer. The venue's musical identity matters to the room as much as the menu: beer glasses and food plates remain on the tables while live jazz occupies the stage. Nakwon Arcade, a building closely associated with instruments, gives that combination a specific local frame. Beer named after nearby streets and landmarks is brewed above the arcade, then poured in a room where music, neighborhood geography, and the product appear together.
