Exposed rafters, timber pillars and a tiled roof frame the two floors of Banggiok Gotaek, an old house in Cheongyang now used as a café. Seats on the ground floor and upstairs sit at different heights, so the view of the eaves, courtyard and surrounding farmland shifts with where you sit. Traditional teas, herbal-ingredient drinks and coffee come with ssuk-tteok, a sticky rice cake scented with mugwort, or yakgwa, a fried honey cookie soaked in grain syrup.
